All About Rock Zoo
Rock Zoo originated in the 1970s when Leonard Dawson noticed two large boulders left behind during a road construction project.
Rather than seeing them as ordinary rocks, Dawson imagined them as animals waiting to take shape.
With the help of his son Larry, Dawson transformed the boulders into sculptures, including a bull and a rooster.
These painted and sculpted creations became the starting point for what would grow into a whimsical outdoor display.
Over the years, more sculptures were added, and the site became a well-loved attraction in the Scottsboro area.
Today, Dawson’s granddaughter, Tammy Murphey, and her family continue to maintain and expand the collection.
