Did you know that you can overdose on just about anything?
Even water. (Just google fatal water intoxication.)
But can you overdose from CBD gummies?
The short answer is no.
You cannot fatally overdose on CBD alone.
Unlike its psychoactive counterpart THC, CBD does not have the same effect on the body’s central nervous system and therefore does not pose a risk of overconsumption.
However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t any potential risks associated with CBD use.
In fact, there are several factors to consider when using CBD gummies that can impact the product’s safety, effectiveness and potential adverse effects.
Let’s take a closer look at some of the risks associated with CBD use and how you can avoid them.
Can You Overdose on CBD gummies?
When we are talking about overdosing, we mean taking an amount that is potentially harmful or fatal to the body.
Many prescription drugs and even over the counter medications have a certain dosage level that can cause serious health effects if you take too much.
Street drugs are the same way.
But CBD products like CBD gummies are different.
They don’t have that same potential for harm.
In fact, there has never been a reported case of someone fatally overdosing on CBD alone.
This is because CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system in a different way than other substances, and does not have the same effects on the body’s vital functions such as breathing or heart rate.
Overdosing on CBD is highly unlikely.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), CBD has a good safety profile.
There have been no reported cases of fatal CBD overdose.
This is because CBD is non-toxic and does not bind to receptors in the brainstem, which control vital functions like respiration.
In contrast, opioids can cause fatal overdoses because they bind to these receptors, leading to respiratory depression.
However, this does not mean that taking excessive amounts of CBD is without risks.
Taking too many CBD gummies CAN lead to uncomfortable side effects, such as dizziness, nausea, and diarrhea.
Additionally, long-term use of high doses of CBD may have unknown consequences, as there is still much research to be done on the long-term effects of CBD use.
Does the Government Restrict CBD? Why?
The government does exercise a certain level of restriction on CBD, primarily due to its association with the cannabis plant, which is classified as a controlled substance.
However, the basis of the restriction largely depends on the source of the CBD.
If derived from hemp (a variety of the cannabis plant with less than 0.3% THC), it is legal under federal law, thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill.
Conversely, if the CBD is derived from a cannabis plant with a higher THC concentration, it falls under the category of a Schedule 1 drug, making its legal status much murkier.
Such restrictions ARE in place to control the potential misuse of the substance, manage quality and safety standards, and to moderate the claims made regarding the health benefits of CBD.
How Much CBD is Lethal for a Person?
Well, we’re not really sure.
There have been no reported cases of fatal CBD overdose.
Before moving on, though, it is important for you to understand the concept of a “lethal dose.”
The LD50, or median lethal dose, is the amount of a substance required to cause death in 50% of a test population.
For CBD, the LD50 has not been established, as it is considered to have a low toxicity level.
In a study conducted on mice, the LD50 of CBD was found to be around 212 mg/kg of body weight when administered intravenously.
This means that for a person weighing 150 pounds (68 kg), the lethal dose would, in theory be approximately 14,416 mg of CBD.
That’s a ridiculous amount of CBD.
Healthline stated that “A 2017 review of research showed that humans can safely tolerate up to 1,500 mg per day. For reference, typical 1 ounce bottles of CBD oil contain from 300 to 1,500 mg.”
Additionally, this dosage is significantly higher than the recommended daily doses of CBD, which typically range from 5 mg to 50 mg.
Nobody needs 5 or more vials of CBD oil a day.
Basically, if you use CBD responsibly, you shouldn’t have any problems whatsoever.
Note: CBD has not been tested for its effects on children, and is not recommended to give to children without a doctor’s specific guidance.
What are the Effects If I Take Too Much CBD?
Can CBD gummies hurt you if you take too much?
Too much of anything can hurt you… coffee, chocolate, working out…
As mentioned earlier, taking excessive amounts of CBD can lead to uncomfortable side effects.
While these side effects are generally not life-threatening, they can be unpleasant and may interfere with your daily activities.
Some common side effects of taking too much CBD include:
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Dry mouth
- Fatigue
- Changes in appetite and weight
Additionally, CBD may interact with medications, leading to increased side effects or reduced effectiveness of the medication.
If you are taking prescription medications, it is very important that you talk to your healthcare provider before using CBD.
How Do I Know How Much CBD to Take?
Finding the right CBD dosage can be a bit of trial and error, as individual responses to CBD can vary widely.
Factors that can influence your optimal CBD dosage include body weight, metabolism, the severity of your symptoms, and the type of CBD products you are using.
When starting with CBD gummies, it is generally recommended to begin with a low dose (1 gummy or even half of a gummy) and gradually increase until you find the dose that gives you the most health benefits, relieves your pain, etc.you.
It is essential to be patient and listen to your body when determining your ideal CBD dosage.
Keep a journal to track your dosage, method of consumption, and any side effects or benefits you experience.
This can help you fine-tune your CBD gummies routine and find the perfect balance for your needs.
The Risks of Unregulated CBD
When it comes to purchasing CBD gummies and other products, be wary of unreliable companies.
The lack of strict regulations in the CBD industry means that some companies may not adhere to quality control standards, potentially exposing consumers to extra THC or other ingredients and additives.
If you buy CBD products like gummies or CBD oil from an unreliable company, you might experience unexpected effects that you don’t want.
Extra THC content in CBD products can lead to psychoactive effects, which may not be suitable for individuals seeking the therapeutic benefits of CBD without the “high” or risk of addiction associated with THC.
Consuming THC can also make you feel extremely anxious and paranoid, which can be especially uncomfortable for individuals with anxiety or other mental health disorders.
Moreover, companies that use low-quality hemp plants may produce CBD products that contain harmful chemicals and pesticides.
To ensure the quality and safety of your CBD products, always purchase from reputable companies that provide third-party lab testing results.
These tests check for levels of CBD, THC, other cannabinoids, and contaminants, giving you peace of mind knowing you are consuming a safe product.
To ensure you are getting a safe and reliable product, it is essential to do thorough research on the company you intend to purchase from.
Look for companies that prioritize transparency, provide third-party lab testing results, and offer detailed information about their sourcing and production processes.
By choosing a reputable and trustworthy company, you can protect yourself from potential risks and enjoy the benefits of CBD gummies with peace of mind.

If you are having issues like chronic pain, anxiety, or sleep disorders, CBD might be worth checking out.

However, it’s important to remember that CBD affects everyone differently, so the results may vary.
But can you overdose on CBD?
You can certainly take more CBD than recommended.
But you are unlikely to have the serious side effects that can happen if you overdose on prescription medications or drugs.
There is little evidence of people overdosing on CBD products.
Using too much CBD CAN, however, cause side effects like dizziness, nausea, and fatigue.
So as always we recommend you just choose to be wise and use good ole common sense.
It’s also important to talk to your healthcare professional before using CBD if you’re taking any medications, just to be on the safe side.
Although CBD shows promise, we still have A LOT to learn about its long-term effects because there hasn’t been enough research yet.
So while CBD seems promising for health and wellness, it’s always good to be cautious and wait for more studies to be done.
Here’s what I recommend:
- Make sure you purchase any CBD products from a reliable company who is transparent about testing and ingredients and doesn’t make you any crazy promises.
- Start with a small dose and slowly increase it until you find the perfect amount that suits you.
- Always consult your healthcare provider if you have concerns about CBD interactions with your medications or any underlying medical conditions.
- Keep up-to-date on the research surrounding CBD to make informed decisions about your health and wellness.
- And, as always, use CBD responsibly and follow recommended dosage guidelines for the safest experience.
With these tips in mind, you can incorporate CBD into your self-care routine and potentially reap its benefits without any negative consequences.
